Build a DIY BASTL INSTRUMENTS KASTLE 2 WAVE BARD / FX WIZARD
Feb

Build a DIY BASTL INSTRUMENTS KASTLE 2 WAVE BARD / FX WIZARD

BASTL INSTRUMENTS KASTLE 2 is the continuation of their super-compact semi-modular KASTLE line of products, with WAY more powerful features and MIDI integration in the V2 line. Normally only sold as a fully-built product, we've been graced with a handful of these rare DIY kits straight from the folks at BASTL and they are in extremely short supply!

In this hands-on workshop participants will build and take home the KASTLE 2 in your choice of firmware, and we will walk you through the process step-by-step. If you are new to DIY we can teach you the skills you need to complete the project such as soldering technique, and facilitators can help with troubleshooting to help get your build working

The hardware is identical but there are two different firmwares you can choose and freely swap which transforms KASTLE 2 from modulation-friendly sampler (WAVE BARD) to creative FX playground (FX WIZARD). Two faceplates are included with the kit, one for each firmware, so you always have the helpful labeling in the correct spots.

~~~
About WAVE BARD:
The Kastle 2 WAVE BARD is an experimental, patchable stereo sample player that empowers you to discover new rhythms and riffs through modulation and modularity.
Samples are organized in banks, which can be selected and sequenced using knobs or CVs from the built-in Pattern generator and LFO.
Reverse your sounds with the LENGTH knob and the Wave Bard’s unique reversing envelope.
Play melodic samples in quantized scales, and spice up the sound with built-in filter, delay or chorus/flanger effects.
You can load not only your own samples, but also rhythms and scales with the web-based app
WAVE BARD now both sends and receives USB MIDI, making studio integration a breeze! Wave Bard is not just a sound box—it’s a powerful MIDI controller and sequencer. Send finely curated USB MIDI data to your DAW or USB MIDI instrument, and discover new ways of playing and interacting through a modular interface—get ready to open a new world of the Kastle magic.
~
About FX WIZARD:
Kastle 2 FX WIZARD is a compact, patchable stereo multi-effects unit that empowers you to explore the limits of sound processing through modulation and modularity.
Use simple yet refined stereo effects, or go nuts with modulation and immerse in powerful glitch and sound design heaven. Instead of navigating thru preset effects, you can craft your own unique effects with dynamic behavior using modulation. The FX WIZARD embraces happy accidents, sparking excitement with unexpected and unheard sonic transformations.
FX WIZARD now both sends and receives USB MIDI, making studio integration a breeze! Use it as an ultra-portable knob controller for your DAW or simply sync it without any hassle.
Electronic Pop Production with Hardware and Ableton Live
Feb
8
Electronic Pop Production with Hardware and Ableton Live
This talk discusses how producers can use a pop/hyperpop lens to combine hardware and software tools into something greater than the sum of parts. When focusing exclusively on hardware/modular or software/DAWs, musicians can tend to repeat familiar sounds - here we offer ways to mingle the best of both worlds to breathe new life into your music. We’ll take a practical technique-based approach, discussing and demonstrating the following:
-Pop/Hyperpop Vocal Processing
-Modular Processing, Overdubbing, and Resampling
-Songwriting: Crafting Lyrics and Vocal Performance Considerations
-Using Modular to Create Transitional Elements
-Chopping Vocals
-Serum/Wavetable Go-To’s
-Taking a modulation-focused approach to Ableton Live
-Pop’s Structural Elements: Arps, Melodies, and Basselines
-Filter/Delay Pinging and Feedback Techniques
In going through the aforementioned techniques we will touch on some broader musical considerations:
~What are hallmark characteristics of electronic pop? Is it more about music/songwriting or about sound design/timbre in nature? What’s the role of technology in pop vs other types of music?
~What is “Pop” philosophically and why do you make it (or find your music described as such)? Is Pop a genre? An aesthetic filter/lens? An attitude? a business? What the hell is hyperpop?
~What’s the role of performance in pop vs other kinds of music? Do you consider improvisation an important part of the genre, and if so what does this improvisation look like?
~How has pop/hyperpop evolved? Where is it going?
All ages and skill levels (including total beginners!) are welcome and will take something away from this class. That said, an understanding of synthesis and/or Ableton Live and/or modular gear will be helpful for getting the most out of the talk, and some prerequisite knowledge in these areas will be assumed. If you want to learn more about any of these we regularly give introductory classes which you can find at synthlibraryportland.org/events
Akemie is a Portland-based hyperpop artist/producer/performer and facilitator at the Synth Library. They regularly perform both improvised sets and original compositions that combine live vocals, modular, and Ableton regularly. They have the (possible) distinction of being the only person on earth to be named after a Eurorack module.
Delay Techniques
Delay Techniques
Delay deserves praise, so we made a whole workshop about it! This intermediate-level talk explores the many faces of everyone's favorite effect, delay. Time scales determine how delayed audio effects function, so we will explore these qualitative changes that occur as the delay time changes. We'll illustrate how delay is central to many forms of audio synthesis/manipulation beyond traditional echo.
We will delve into the anatomy of the delay effect, showing you how to create echos with any audio buffer and creating feedback routing ourselves using a generic mackie mixer. We'll show how adding effects inside the delay feedback loop can help you gain precision control over how repeats unfold, as well as provide an opportunity for unexpected results and wild recursive madness!
Understanding USB MIDI: An Introduction
You plug your USB MIDI Keyboard into your computer and it (mostly) just works. Do you ever wonder how? Do you wish you could plug your USB keyboard to your
synth, but it doesn't have a regular MIDI OUT? This is the workshop for you!
This talk will show how USB MIDI works, with an intro section so you know how USB works in general. It describes MIDI 1.0 on Full Speed USB 2.0 only because that is what is most commonly used by most USB MIDI hardware these days. By the end of the talk, you should have a better idea what goes on when you plug your MIDI controller to a computer and how MIDI data is communicated.
You will learn about free software tools and low cost hardware for deep debugging of USB MIDI devices and for solving common problems with USB MIDI (and Audio). The talk will conclude with demonstrations of some USB MIDI host and device projects with links to more details on GitHub.
This free workshop is a lecture only; No DIY projects will be built or provided during the lecture.
Intro to Tape Loops
In this workshop you will learn the magic of tape loops—how they work, how to make them, and why they've been a beloved technique for years. This two-hour workshop is beginner friendly--no experience is required.
We will be teaching you:
- how audio tape works,
- how cassettes and cassette players work,
- and how to hack a cassette to make a tape loop.
By the end of the workshop you will have made at least one tape loop and will go home with supplies to make some more on your own.
All people in recovery are welcome to join us at Synth Library Portland for a monthly event series designed to foster connection, creativity, collaboration, and community among local artists.
We aim to create a supportive and empowering space where people in recovery—however they choose to define it—can grow, express themselves, and build relationships, regardless of experience or skill level. This is an inclusive, welcoming space for all.
While Synth Library Portland is providing the gathering space and sponsoring this free event you do not need to be a member of the library to attend, though we hope you consider joining our diverse crew of creatives.
Exploring Granular Synthesis
Dec
13
Exploring Granular Synthesis
This workshop provides an introduction to the principles, history, and practice of granular synthesis, a method of sound generation and transformation based on the manipulation of very short audio fragments, or “grains.” Participants will trace the development of granular concepts from early musique concrète and electroacoustic works through to modern digital and modular implementations.
The session will combine theoretical discussion with practical demonstration. Topics include the origins of the sound-particle concept in the work of Dennis Gabor, the evolution of grain-based composition, and the implementation of granular techniques in both software and hardware. Participants will explore granular synthesis with free software tools as well as modular hardware including the Mutable Instruments Clouds, and Intellijel Multigrain, applying these systems to create evolving textures, time-stretched transformations, and complex soundscapes.
